MANILA, Philippines — The country is expected to have cloudy weather with scattered rain showers and thunderstorms due to the effects of a low-pressure area and Tropical Depression (TD) Emong, the state weather service said.

Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa), in its Sunday afternoon bulletin, said a low-pressure area in the West Philippine Sea will bring rains in central and southern Luzon on Sunday night, while Emong will dump rains in parts of northern Luzon.

The Visayas and Mindanao meanwhile are also expected to experience rain on Sunday night with Emong pulling the southwest monsoon.

“Bahagya nitong nahahatak ang ating southwest monsoon na magpapaulan ngayong gabi sa Visayas at Mindanao,” according to weather specialist Ana Clauren.

While no gale warning is raised in the country’s waters, the northern and eastern sections of Central Luzon and Southern Luzon are expected to have moderate to rough sea conditions, while the rest of the country would have slight to moderate sea conditions.

Meanwhile, Emong’s center was last located 780 kilometers (km) east of Virac, Catanduanes as of 4:00 pm.

It is currently moving northwestward at 25 km per hour and has maximum sustained winds of 55 km per hour and gustiness of up to 70 km per hour.

Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 1 is still hoisted in Batanes and Northeastern Portion of Cagayan (Santa Ana, Gonzaga, including the Babuyan Islands.)

The said areas are expected to have winds of 30-60 kilometers per hour over the next 36 hours.

Emong is projected to intensify into a tropical storm in the next 24 hours.

Pagasa said Emong is expected to exit the Philippine Area of Responsibility on Tuesday afternoon.
