MANILA, Philippines — Makati Mayor Abby Binay was appointed as Board of mayors and leaders to represent Southeast Asia in the Global Covenant of Mayors (GCoM) mayoral board, the organization announced on Thursday.
Binay, as a board member, is tasked to take the region toward ambitious emissions reduction goals and serve as a critical voice toward meeting the goals of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change’s (UNFCCC) Climate Champions’ Race to Resilience campaign.
“It is a great honor to be selected to join the board of the Global Covenant of Mayors,” Binay was quoted as saying.
“I look forward to being a champion for mayors in Southeast Asia and around the world, as we work together to implement actionable solutions for a more resilient and sustainable future,” said the local chief executive, who is also a graduate of human ecology and law.
Binay will lead the Cities Race to Resilience campaign during a side event at Asia Pacific Climate Week on July 8, to encourage cities globally to join the campaign and commit to undertaking risk and vulnerability assessments and concrete resilience actions.
GCoM leads the largest global alliance for city climate leadership, representing more than 10,500 cities and local governments from 142 countries.
