BFAR raises red tide alert in Sorsogon Bay

LEGAZPI CITY — The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) in Bicol on Saturday warned fisherfolks and residents in Sorsogon that the gathering, selling, and consumption of shellfish coming from Sorsogon Bay in Sorsogon is prohibited due to the high level of red tide toxin.

Nonie Enolva, BFAR Bicol spokesperson, quoting the BFAR Shellfish Bulletin issued on Friday, said shellfish collected from Sorsogon Bay tested positive for paralytic shellfish poison that is beyond the regulatory limit.

The bulletin said the shellfish ban does not include fish harvested from the said areas which are safe for consumption provided that they are fresh and washed thoroughly and their internal organs such as gills and intestines are removed before cooking.

Enolva said the shellfish ban would stay until lifted.
