MANILA, Philippines — As the world celebrates Pride Month this June, Vice President Leni Robredo on Monday called on Filipinos to stand with the LGBTQIA community in their fight against discrimination and oppression.

In a statement, Robredo recognized the many times the LGBTQIA community had stood for the vulnerable and the marginalized.

“Throughout the years, the LGBTQIA+ community provided a shelter to the oppressed, a voice to the marginalized and a family to the isolated,” Robredo said. “Despite this, challenges persist [for them] Much more have to be done to truly establish an atmosphere of acceptance and genuine equality for all.”

The Vice President called for respect and equal rights for the community and urged Filipinos to “intensify our efforts” for a truly inclusive society, which embraces the LGBTQIA community as fellow human beings.
