A mother accidentally shot her 5-year-old child while she was targeting a neighbor’s dog that got loose in Texas in the United States.
Angelia Mia Vargas, the 24-year-old mom from Houston, has since been charged with deadly conduct with a firearm, as per ABC13 yesterday, June 2.
The incident occurred last Saturday afternoon, May 29, when Vargas, her son and her husband were biking outside their home.
That was when the 6-month-old boxer puppy Bruno came running outside one resident’s house and went to the street, according to the report.
“I came out of my house because Bruno was barking and barking. I thought my brother was coming,” Bruno’s owner was quoted as saying.
“So, I open the door just a little bit and he comes running out,” he added. His identity was withheld.
As seen in security footage obtained by the news outlet, Bruno can be seen running outside the house with the owner chasing closely behind, trying to get him back inside.
When Bruno got to the street, however, gunshots were immediately heard followed by the screams of the boy’s parents, according to the report.
Armed with a small caliber pistol, Vargas had shot at the puppy three times but accidentally struck her son in the abdomen. The boy was taken to the hospital without life-threatening injuries.
Bruno also did not suffer from any grave injury, but was only grazed in one leg, the report said.
Bruno’s owner said in an interview that Vargas could have “handled it differently,” emphasizing that he, Vargas and her husband were all present at the scene anyway.
He also shared how he felt bad for the boy and that the incident traumatized him, giving him nightmares “hearing the little boy crying.”
Bruno’s owner was also given a Class C misdemeanor citation for having a loose dog, the report said. Ian Biong
