MANILA, Philippines — The daily count of new COVID-19 infections swelled past the 7,000-mark again on Thursday as deaths hit 199.
In its case bulletin, the Department of Health (DOH) said an additional 7,217 contracted the illness caused by new coronavirus SARS-CoV-2, boosting active infections to 55,790.
The passing of 199 more patients, on the other hand, brought the nationwide death toll from COVID-19 to 21,357. But the DOH said this figure is only 1.71 percent of the total confirmed cases which is now at 1,247,899.
DOH likewise reported Thursday the recovery of 3,483 patients, raising the number of patients who survived the disease to 1,170,752.
According to the agency, the current 55,790 active cases represent only 4.5 percent of all confirmed cases in the country. It also said that 95.6 percent of the active cases are mild and asymptomatic.
The last time DOH reported new cases above 7,000 was last Sunday, May 30, at 7,058 cases. New infections reported days before ranged from 5,000 to 6,000.
Meanwhile, 14 percent of the 44,197 individuals who were tested for SARS-CoV-2 were found positive for the virus last June 1.
DOH also said that 34 duplicate entries, including 16 recoveries, were removed from the case count.
There were also 141 cases previously tagged as recoveries that were reclassified as deaths after final validation, it added.
All laboratories were operational on June 1, DOH said, but four laboratories were not able to submit their data. Based on DOH’s statistics in the last 14 days, the four non-reporting laboratories contribute – on average – 0.29 percent of samples tested and 0.12 percent of positive individuals.
