MANILA, Philippines — The Commission on Human Rights (CHR) on Thursday lauded the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) for giving women livelihood support through its Sustainable Livelihood Program (SLP) amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
The SLP is a capacity building program that provides opportunities to the vulnerable, marginalized, and disadvantaged individuals, families, and communities to enhance their livelihood assets
“While most of the efforts being made by the government are focused on alleviating the pandemic, the responsibility to provide support for the underprivileged remains. This especially rings true since the pandemic has directly affected the employment of many Filipinos,” CHR spokesperson Jacqueline Ann de Guia said in a statement.
“In this regard, the Commission on Human Rights commends the efforts being made by the Department of Social Welfare and Development in the continuous provision of livelihood support to women through the Sustainable Livelihood Program, even in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic,” she added.
De Guia also cited Article 25 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights that highlights the right of every citizen to have basic needs such as food, clothing, and shelter for their health and well-being.
