MANILA, Philippines — Rotational brownouts continued on Tuesday as The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) placed the Luzon Grid on red alert and yellow alert, including Metro Manila.
In an advisory, the NGCP said that the yellow alert started at 9:00 a.m. and lasted until 10:00 a.m. This will resume at 5:00 p.m to 6:00 p.m., and then at 10:00 p.m. to 12:00 midnight.
Meanwhile, the red alert started at 10:00 a.m. and will last until 5 p.m., after which it will resume at 6:00 p.m. until 10:00 p.m.
Being under red alert means that there are zero ancillary services or insufficient power supply in the grid, while yellow alert means there is low power reserves due to high electricity demand.
NGCP earlier implemented manual load dropping (MLD) or rotational brownouts in some areas in the country “to maintain the integrity of the power system.”
The following areas were under rotational brownouts on Tuesday, June 1, from 11 a.m. to 12 noon.:
- ISELCO I (parts of Isabela)
- NEECO II-Area 1 (parts of Nueva Ecija)
- SAJELCO (San Jose City, Nueva Ecija)
- PAMES (Pantabangan, Nueva Ecija)
- CASURECO II and CASURECO IV (parts of Camarines Sur)
- MERALCO (parts of Metro Manila)
“NGCP encourages everyone to exercise prudence in using electricity,” NGCP said.
As of 8:47 a.m, NGCP showed that the available capacity stood at 11,408 megawatts, while the peak demand was estimated at 11,593 megawatts.
Luzon also experienced rotational brownouts on Monday after it was also placed on red alert during the afternoon.
