MANILA, Philippines — The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) has ordered heads of all barangays to ensure compliance to minimum public health standards and to prevent mass gatherings.
On Friday, Interior Secretary Eduardo Año said the DILG would issue a memorandum circular to village chiefs to intensify the campaign against holding activities that can potentially be superspreader events.
“The reality is violations on [minimum public health standards] and superspreaders happen in barangays,” Año said.
Under the circular, village chiefs are authorized to regularly inspect sports, recreation, and leisure facilities; and regulate public gatherings, such as drinking, cockfighting, tupada, fiesta, parades, religious events, and cultural festivals.
