MANILA, Philippines—A trainer plane crashed in waters off Caba town, La Union province, killing its pilot around noon on Wednesday (May 26).
The Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) said the aircraft was a P-2010 (RP-C8230) trainer plane.
The plane took off in Iba, Zambales and was supposed to stop over at the airports of La Union and Lingayen town, Pangasinan province then head back to Iba.
The pilot, a student of First Aviation Academy in Subic, was brought to the Caba Municipal Health Office where he was pronounced dead by doctors, according to a separate report of the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG).
The PCG in La Union helped retrieve aircraft debris from where the plane sank some 300 meters from the shoreline.
An investigation is ongoing, the PCG said.
The chairman of Wenceslao village in Caba, Frenie Cueto, said residents heard a loud crashing sound when the plane plunged into the sea.
Fishermen rushed to the site hoping to save the pilot who was unconscious, Cueto said.
ID cards found at the crash site confirmed the pilot to be a flight student. WITH A REPORT BY YOLANDA SOTELO
