COVID-19 cases in Zambales jail rise to 5

SAN ANTONIO, Zambales –– Another inmate in the provincial jail has tested positive for COVID-19, an official said Tuesday, May 25.

Dr. Noel Bueno, provincial health director, said the 56-year-old male detainee has comorbidities, such as liver abscess, diabetes, anemia, asthma, and high blood pressure.

After feeling ill on May 19, the inmate was immediately transferred to a private hospital, where he was found reactive to COVID-19 on a rapid test.  He was later confirmed positive for the disease.

Last week, a 41-year-old inmate and a 45-year-old jail guard in the same prison had also tested positive for COVID-19.

Two more inmates, a 34-year-old woman, and a 42-year-old man, were added to the cases there on May 25.

It was not immediately known how the inmates got the virus.

The province has 2,189 COVID-19 cases since the pandemic started. At least 214 of these remain active.
