MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Health (DOH) reported 3,972 new COVID-19 cases on Tuesday, bringing the number of active novel coronavirus infections nationwide to 48,201 and the total case count to 1,188,672.

DOH said in its latest bulletin that the latest sum of active cases represents 4.1 percent of all the documented COVID-19 cases in the country since the pandemic hit in 2020. It also said that the majority of these active cases, or 94 percent, were mild or asymptomatic.

According to the health department, all laboratories were operational on Sunday while 10 laboratories were not able to submit their data on time. Based on data in the last 14 days, the 10 non-reporting laboratories contribute, on average, 3.2 percent of samples tested and 5.5 percent of positive individuals.

DOH also reported on Tuesday that 4,659 additional patients have recovered from COVID-19, driving the tally of people who have survived the disease to 1,120,452. This, it noted, is 94.3 percent of the overall case count.

The agency likewise said 36 more died of the disease and that the nationwide COVID-19 death toll is now at 20,019 – 1.68 percent of the total confirmed cases.

DOH further explained that 13.1 percent of the 32,112 tested individuals were found positive for SARS-CoV-2, the causative agent for COVID-19.

It added that six duplicate entries, including three recoveries, were removed from the total case count while 10 cases previously tagged as recovered patients were reclassified as deaths after final validation.
