Search to recognize achievements in S&T

The National Academy of Science and Technology (NAST), the highest recognition body on science and technology in the country, is searching for nominees for various awards.

The awards will be given to outstanding young scientists, aged 40 in the year of award, who have made significant contributions to science and technology.

The NAST-Hugh Greenwood Environmental Science Award will recognize outstanding scientific and technological research works that contribute to environmental protection and conservation. The grand prize winner will receive US $1,000 from Dr. Greenwood and a plaque of recognition from the academy. Winners of special citations will receive plaques of recognition.

The NAST-TWAS Prize for Young Scientist in the Philippines is given to outstanding young Filipino scientist by NAST and the Third World Academy of Sciences (TWAS). One award each year of US $2,000 and a plaque is given to the selected discipline for the year—biology, chemistry, mathematics or physics. For 2012, the NAST-TWAS Prize for Young Scientist in the Philippines will be given for mathematics.

The NAST Talent Search for Young Scientists is a project of NAST to encourage young people 35 years old or younger to pursue a career in science. Trophies and cash prizes will be awarded to the best three scientific paper presenters. The paper that will be presented may be basic or applied research.

The NAST-LELEDFI Award for Outstanding Research in Tropical Medicine is intended for outstanding research works that contribute to the advancement of the country’s knowledge and practice in tropical medicine.

The Outstanding Scientific Paper Awards are given annually for papers published in Philippine scientific or technical journals within five years preceding the award. Papers will be judged based on the quality of their content, contribution to science and technology, clarity of presentation, and thoroughness of documentation.

The Outstanding Book and/or Monograph Awards are given for books and monographs published in the country or elsewhere by Filipino authors or co-authors within five years preceding the award. Books or monographs will be judged based on the quality and originality of their content and contribution.

The deadline for submission of nominations is on Nov. 30.
