Quezon logs record-high 127 COVID-19 cases in single day

LUCENA CITY –– The surge in COVID-19 cases in Quezon province continues as health authorities recorded 127 new patients Monday, its highest single-day tally since the pandemic broke out in March last year.

The Integrated Provincial Health Office (IPHO) in its 5 p.m. bulletin issued May 24 showed that Tayabas City posted the highest with 24 new cases followed by Lucena City with 16.

The IPHO also recorded 102 recovered patients, topped by Lucena City with 24, followed by Candelaria town, 22.

Quezon, which remains under general community quarantine, logged 12,368 COVID-19 cases and 10,820 recoveries as of May 24.

At least 1,890 of them contracted the virus from May 1 to 24.

Last month, the IPHO recorded 2,276 cases compared to only 815 in March.

The death toll in the province rose to 497, and 97 of them died from May 1 to 24.

On Sunday, Quezon saw its highest record of COVID-19 deaths in a single day with 13 fatalities.

The next day, IPHO reported the deaths of five more virus carriers – three in the island town of Alabat and another two in the island locality of Burdeos, both off the Pacific Ocean.

The province has 1,081 active cases from 855 on May 1. Lucena has the highest active cases with 174.

Dr. Grace Santiago, IPHO head, said the rising number of new cases could be partly due to the public’s disregard of health and safety protocols.
