MMDA says traffic still manageable, no reason to impose coding scheme

MANILA, Philippines — The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) sees no reason to reimpose the number coding scheme yet as traffic in the metropolis is still manageable.

MMDA chairman Benhur Abalos said on Thursday that the number coding scheme is only implemented when traffic is worse.

“Sa ngayon naman manageable naman ang traffic natin dito. So far okay pa naman ang traffic kaya we don’t see, for the meantime, any reason para magkaroon ng number coding,” he said in a Palace briefing.

(For now, traffic is manageable. So far, traffic here is okay so we don’t see, for the meantime, any reason to implement the number coding scheme.)

He said the agency will reimpose the number coding scheme once traffic worsens.

The MMDA last year suspended the number coding scheme “until further notice” due to the “limited operations of public transportation in Metro Manila.”

However, the ban on light trucks on Edsa and Shaw Boulevard will again be enforced starting Monday next week, May 24.
