MANILA, Philippines — The Manila Electric Co. (Meralco) will resume service disconnection of clients with unpaid or overdue bills as the government eased quarantine restrictions, but pledged to remain “compassionate” with affected customers and arrange lighter schedules of payment.
Meralco made the announcement after Malacañang placed Metro Manila, Rizal, Laguna and Cavite on general community quarantine (GCQ) “with heightened restrictions” until May 31.
Meralco’s franchise area reaches as far south as Quezon province—also under GCQ— and north to Pampanga, which is under modified GCQ.
The Manuel V. Pangilinan-led power distributor said in a statement that the company would continue to be considerate and compassionate and ready to help customers manage their arrears.
“Given the heightened restrictions still being implemented during the GCQ, we continue to take into consideration the challenges our customers are facing amid these difficult times,” said Ferdinand Geluz, chief commercial officer of Meralco.
“We hope our continued consideration will ease the burden of our customers, providing additional time for them to settle their bills,” Geluz said.
He advised customers having difficulties in settling their bills to get in touch with Meralco representatives through the company’s website, social media channels—Facebook and Twitter—and their 16211 hotline or at business centers.
By doing this, Geluz said a lighter payment schedule might be arranged. Otherwise, “standard disconnection procedures will apply.”
“Meralco business operations, including meter reading and bill delivery activities, will of course still continue throughout the GCQ,” he said.
“Our continued operations will ensure that actual consumption for the month will be billed accordingly,” he added.
