COVID-19 beds: 16 NCR hospitals in critical level, 9 under full capacity — DOH

MANILA, Philippines — Out of the 16 hospitals in Metro Manila that were placed under critical status in terms of bed capacity solely for COVID-19 patients, nine have already reached 100 percent bed occupancy according to the Department of Health (DOH) as of May 12.

The hospitals that have reported full bed occupancy were:

A Zarate General Hospital
E Zarate Hospital
F.Y. Manalo Medical Foundation
Marikina Doctors Hospital and Medical Center, Inc.
Metro North Medical Center and Hospital Inc.
Philippine Orthopedic Center
Recuenco General Hospital, Inc.
Rosario Maclang Bautista General Hospital
VRP Medical Center

The figures are lower from the previous 27 hospitals classified as critical and 15 under full bed occupancy last May 5.

Meanwhile, around 15 hospitals were listed under the high-risk status. The figure is also lower than the 21 facilities reported last week.

The latest DOH information likewise bared that 156 facilities have submitted data and were categorized based on their occupancy levels.

In addition, around 64.12 percent or 772 of 1,204 total Intensive Care Units (ICU) beds solely for COVID-19 patients in Metro Manila hospitals are already in use, according to the same DOH data.

The health department also added that of the same date, 45.73 percent or 2,217 of 4,848 isolation beds, and 48.98 percent or 1,828 of 3,732 ward beds in NCR are likewise occupied.

Overall, it noted that the bed occupancy rate for the whole NCR has reached 49.2 percent, with 4,817 of the total 9,784 beds now in use. This is still lower than the recorded 54.5 percent overall bed occupancy rate last week

The DOH classifies occupancy levels for COVID-19 beds in health centers as either critical, high risk, moderate, and safe.

Under the critical level, hospitals have already reached more than 85 percent of their bed occupancy for COVID-19 patients.

Hospitals are classified as high risk if 70 percent but not more than 85 percent of its COVID-19 beds are occupied, while those with a COVID-19 bed capacity of 60 to 70 percent rate are classified as moderate.

Hospitals fall under the safe level if their bed utilization rate is less than 60 percent.

INQUIRER.net analyzed the latest most available data – May 12, 2021 – based on DOH’s COVID-19 tracker.

This article aims to show how prepared Metro Manila hospitals are, should there be a rush in COVID-19 infections in the region, which remains the epicenter of the health crisis in the Philippines.

However, only hospitals in Metro Manila that have information on COVID-19 bed allocation for the treatment of new coronavirus patients were included in this article.
