COVID-19 after vaccines: ‘You can still get infected if you are careless’

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY—At least 97 health workers in the city still got infected with SARS Cov2, the coronavirus that causes COVID-19, after getting vaccine shots, a case that a top city health expert said did not mean the vaccines were ineffective.

The city has been seeing a rise in infections, cramming isolation facilities and intensive care units with patients.

Dr. Joselito Retuya, city epidemiologist, said 75 of the 97 health workers got injected with Coronavac, the vaccine made by Chinese company Sinovac, and 22 got AstraZeneca.

Of the 75 who got Coronavac, 51 had completed two doses while 24 had only the first dose.

“The vaccines we have are not perfect,” said Retuya. “Some vaccinated people still end up catching the virus. You can still get infected if you are careless with your health protocols,” Retuya said.

He added that the primary purpose of the vaccine is to prevent anyone from getting severely sick with COVID-19.
