MANILA, Philippines — There are more vaccines in Makati than people who are slated to be vaccinated, the city mayor said as the bulk of vaccines arrived in the city on Tuesday.

Mayor Abigail Binay said the city received almost 20,000 AstraZeneca doses and 5,800 initial doses of Pfizer vaccine on Tuesday morning, but the city only has a “backlog” of less than 2,000 people vaccinees belonging to priority sectors.

“Medyo may problema po ako na magandang problema,” she said in a Teleradyo interview. “Marami pong dumating ngayong araw na ‘to, bugso po ang dumating ngayong araw.”

(I have a beautiful problem. Many vaccines have arrived today, a bulk of them.)

“Kailangan ko pong magbakuna ng 2,500 for Pfizer at almost 10,000 po sa AstraZeneca, eh ang backlog ko po wala nang dalawang libo,” she noted. (I need 2,500 people to vaccinate with Pfizer, then almost 10,000 for AstraZeneca, but our backlogs are less than 2,000.)

Binay encouraged all qualified constituents to get vaccinated, especially those who are still waiting for their preferred brand.

“Feeling ko yung iba hindi nagre-rehistro dahil hinihintay pa yung gusto nilang brand,” Binay said. “Nakikiusap ako sa mga kababayan ko sa Makati na mag-rehistro na dahil ang dami nating dumating na bakuna ngayong araw, kulang na po iyong aking babakunahan kumpara dun sa aking ibabakuna.

(I feel that some are not registering because they are waiting for their preferred vaccine brand. I plead to all my constituents in Makati to get registered because so many vaccines have arrived today, there are now less vaccinees than there are vaccines.)

Latest data from the city government said that Makati has a total of 20,560 COVID-19 cases, including 1,028 active cases, 18,915 recoveries, and 617 deaths.
