MANILA, Philippines — Mothers are “equal partners in parenting, yet in many cases, [they] are the law in the family,” the Integrated Bar of the Philippines (IBP) chief said in celebration of Mother’s Day.
“More than the law, your love keeps your family going,” said IBP president Domingo Egon Cayosa in a statement on Sunday.
“The great and small things that you do (and don’t do) make your houses homes of caring and comfort and your families circles of joy and hope. Your families are better because of you,” he added.
During the celebration of International Women’s Day two months ago, the lawyers’ organization strongly advocated for rules and legislation further promoting gender sensitivity and equality and eliminating bias against women.
The IBP also noted that while the Philippines ranks high in global standards for women-friendly policies, there is still a need for the implementation of existing laws to protect and improve women’s rights.
The Philippines is currently ranked 16th out of 153 countries with the “narrowest gap” between men and women on the Global Gender Gap Report 2020 of the World Economic Forum.
Philippines remains the only Asian country in the top twenty, followed by Lao People’s Democratic Republic which ranked 43rd.
