Suspected NPA rebel yields to soldiers, policemen in Zambales

SAN ANTONIO, Zambales – A suspected communist rebel turned himself over to the authorities on Friday (May 7) after negotiating his surrender with government troops.

Edward Alipio, a 25-year-old member of an Aeta community in San Marcelino town, was reportedly among the alleged members of the New People’s Army (NPA) who were being tracked by soldiers and policemen following a clash on August 21 last year.

Two Aeta men were arrested after this encounter and became the first suspects to be charged with terrorism under the Anti-Terror Act of 2020.

Alipio reportedly belongs to the NPA Komiteng Larangang Guerilla (KLG), according to a report from the 2nd Provincial Mobile Force Company of the Philippine National Police.

The police said Alipio, a farmer, and other KLG members hid in the forests of Barangay (village) Buhawen after the firefight with government forces. JOANNA ROSE AGLIBOT
