Article 2 enough to convict Corona, says lead prosecutor Tupas

MANILA, Philippines—Lead prosecutor Iloilo Representative Niel Tupas Jr. said on Thursday they were confident that with Article 2 alone, they can convict Chief Justice Renato Corona.

He said because of the developments, “we are very certain that on the basis of Article 2 alone, we will get a conviction.”

The prosecution panel will also trim down its witnesses to half and are preparing to finish tackling Article 2, which covers the alleged ill-gotten wealth of Justice Corona, by next week.

“As of now our decision is to present all [articles but] with fewer witnesses. By next week, we will have to reassess but there is a possibility that we will stop with Article 2,” he said.

On the issue of the temporary restraining order on the presentation of foreign currency accounts, Tupas said they would await the Senate’s action on Monday.

“We are very confident the tide has certainly turned in favor of the prosecution,” he said.
