Corona petition in SC admission of ownership of bank accounts—prosecution

MANILA, Philippines – The filing of a petition for certiorari by Chief Justice Renato Corona is an admission that the bank accounts subpoenaed by the Senate, acting as an impeachment court, were his, a spokesman for the prosecution said Thursday.

Representative Romero “Miro” Quimbo told reporters during a press briefing that the “protection of the bank secrecy law may only be invoked if you are the owner of the bank account,” and in stating that the subpoena was a violation of his right to due process, he was also admitting that the accounts were indeed his.

Meanwhile, reacting to Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile’s disclosure in the trial that Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas has started an investigation into the leaked bank records allegedly owned by Corona, Aurora Representative Juan Edgardo “Sonny” Angara said that the prosecutors were willing to be subjected to the investigation.
