MANILA, Philippines — The country’s active COVID-19 case count went down to 66,060 on Tuesday, May 4, as the Department of Health (DOH) recorded lower than usual new infections.
DOH’s COVID-19 bulletin showed that 5,683 new cases were only recorded on Tuesday — far from the over 10,000 cases during the peak of the COVID-19 surge. Additional 9,028 patients recovered from the disease brought the total recoveries to 984,210.
However, the low active case count may also be due to DOH’s admission that 21 laboratories were not able to submit their data to the COVID-19 Document Repository System (CDRS), despite all labs being operational on May 2.
The death toll is currently at 17,622 after 97 new deaths were recorded. All in all, the country has 1,067,892 confirmed COVID-19 cases.
Most of the patients or 94.6 percent of active cases still exhibited mild symptoms only, while 1.7 percent were asymptomatic. At least 1.5 percent of the patients currently have severe symptoms while 1.2 percent are in critical condition.
Of the 35,286 tests conducted from May 2, DOH said that 14,3 percent tested positive. In terms of COVID-19 bed capacity in the National Capital Region, 74 percent of intensive care unit beds have been utilized while 50 percent of isolation beds are occupied.
DOH said that 15 duplicate entries were removed from the total case count, of which 11 are recoveries. Also, 40 cases previously tagged as recoveries were reclassified to deaths after further validation.
