SAN ANTONIO, Zambales—Olongapo’s respite from COVID-19 deaths ended on Thursday (April 29) after a 92-year-old man became the city’s latest fatality.
The elderly man, a resident of Barangay Kalaklan, was also among new patients that day. The city’s COVID-19 death toll is now 64.
In an advisory, Olongapo Mayor Rolen Paulino Jr. said the man had no COVID-19 symptoms but suffered from hypertension, which experts said was among the cases of comorbidity that increases COVID-19 mortality.
The patient was found unresponsive at home on Wednesday (April 28) prompting his relatives to rush him to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Results of tests later confirmed that he was positive for SARS Cov2, the highly contagious coronavirus that causes COVID-19.
Paulino said 16 other COVID-19 cases were recorded in the city that day, half of them involving people aged 50 and above.
The city now has 1,462 COVID-19 cases recorded since 2020 with 155 remaining active. At least 1,243 of the cases were considered as recoveries.
