75-year-old diabetic battles COVID-19, pneumonia, sepsis

Angelica Corporal, a single mother of two, describes her 75-year-old mom, Lenny, as the source of strength in their household.

Since the start of April, however, Lenny, who is diabetic, has been battling COVID-19 which has left her sickly and weak.

She was found to be positive for the coronavirus after a doctor required her to undergo a swab test prior to surgery. An infection in her foot had earlier developed into gangrene, making amputation necessary.

With the rising cases of COVID-19 in the country, the Corporal family found it hard to look for a hospital that could still accept coronavirus-positive patients.

From their house in Malolos, Bulacan, they went as far as Pangasinan in their search for a room for Lenny until they finally decided to bring her home and provide her with an oxygen tank and an intravenous line.

On April 19, a room became available at a hospital in Malolos where Lenny is now being treated for sepsis secondary to COVID-19, pneumonia and gangrene.

She was supposed to have her foot amputated this week but her family decided to postpone the surgery because they believe she is still not well enough.

“I cannot afford to lose my mother so I’m doing everything I can to help her get treatment,” Corporal said, adding that she has been crying almost every day thinking of where they would get the money for Lenny’s hospital expenses.

As of April 29, the bill was P333,000 and the hospital had given them notice to make a partial payment of P100,000.

Donations can be deposited in the Landbank account of Angelica Veronica Lee Corporal with account no. 3477075397. Corporal can be contacted at tel. 0917-1530972.
