DOH sees higher COVID-19 recovery counts as it shifts to daily time-based tagging

/ 03:18 AM April 21, 2021

MANILA, Philippines — Expect the reported number of COVID-19 recoveries to increase as the Department of Health (DOH) shifts from a weekly to a daily time-based tagging of such cases, Health Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire said in a DOH group chat on Tuesday.

This means that several recoveries that happened during the week would no longer be tallied on a single day — usually during Sunday, like on April 18 when DOH tallied over 72,000 recoveries.

“We are already doing daily time-based tagging instead of the weekly tagging.  The increase in recoveries is expected because the cases have increased where more than 95 percent are mild and asymptomatic,” Vergeire said, speaking partly in Filipino.

Tuesday marked the third straight day that the number of COVID-19 recoveries was at four digits. Sunday’s count was at 72,000 plus, Monday’s at 9,266, and Tuesday’s at 21,664.

Despite the recent streak of high recovery counts, the number of active COVID-19 cases nationwide on Tuesday was still over 100,000 — at 127,006 to be exact.

A huge bulk of the cases were recorded in the so-called National Capital Region Plus bubble, which has seen a surge in infections.

The bubble — composed of Metro Manila, Bulacan, Cavite, Laguna, and Rizal — has been put under modified enhanced community quarantine (MECQ) to curb the surge in infections.
