Police arrest former high school teacher over alleged rape of student

MANILA, Philippines — A former teacher accused of raping a Grade 12 student was arrested after being on the run for four years, the Philippine National Police Anti-Kidnapping Group (PNP-AKG) said in a report made public Monday.

According to a police report, suspect Ramil Renegado Gara was arrested in Barangay Baesa, Quezon City, on Saturday by virtue of an arrest warrant issued by Caloocan City Regional Trial Court Branch 121 for the crime of rape.

Authorities said the warrant was issued after a complaint was filed by the victim’s family in 2017.

The victim claimed that when she was just 18 years old and in Grade 12, Gara threatened to give her a failing grade if she refused to give in to his sexual advances.

After the victim’s family took the case to court, the suspect went into hiding.

Following his arrest, Gara was placed under the temporary custody of the PNP-AKG for “further documentation and prior return of the Warrant of Arrest to the issuing Court.”
