Cebu City inmate, teener found hanging dead

A former school official  detained on charges of estafa was found hanging by his neck in the Cebu City jail yesterday morning.

Depression over the charges he was facing may have pushed  Samuel Mabida, 50, to commit suicide, officials said.

In a separate incident, a teenager in barangay Luz, Cebu City took his own life by hanging himself at home.

He had come home drunk Friday night and was scolded by a sister for  neglecting his household chores.

Mabida,  a former dean in a school in Dipolog City, left a six-page suicide letter  where he expressed his depression over his case and  financial problems that hounded  him.

Two T-shirts and a sweat shirt were tied together and used in the hanging,  said SPO4 Alex Dacua, homicide investigator of the Cebu City Police.

Inmate Ronald Zamayla discovered the body.

He said he went to the conjugal room around 6 a.m. to have a massage but was shocked to see Mabida suspended from the ceiling. Zamayla then alerted jail personnel.

The nurse on duty, Manuel Ygay,  tried to revive Mabido but it was too late.

Mabido was arrested and detained on November last year on  charges of estafa and illegal recruitment.

Some inmates told police that Mabida had threatened  to commit suicide if he was convicted. His wife had told officials Mabida’s depression started when he was in jail.

In  barangay Luz,  Cebu City,  18-year-old Langtrod Deveber was found hanging by the neck in his house.

Relatives rushed the teenager to the Cebu City Medical Center (CCMC) where attending physicians declared him dead.

The victim’s brother, Rolly, told radio dySS that  his younger brother was earlier scolded by their eldest sister for frequently calling and texting his girlfriend who lives in Siquijor province and for not helping in the household chores.

Rolly said his brother was drunk when he last saw him alive on Friday night.
