MANILA, Philippines – The Senate, sitting as impeachment court, junked Chief Justice Renato Corona’s motion to defer action on the subpoena that was issued by the chamber to bank officials ordering them to present the accounts allegedly owned by the Chief Justice.
The decision was made after an urgent caucus held by senators Wednesday.
“The motion to defer action on subpoena of banks pending before us earlier, the majority of the members of the court have decided to deny the motion,” said Senate Majority Leader Vicente “Tito” Sotto III.
Sotto said majority of the senators who attended the caucus also denied Corona’s motion to stop reception of evidence involving the case between the Flight Attendants and Stewards Association of the Philippines (FASAP).
“The majority of the members have decided to deny the motion with a reminder to the prosecution not to touch upon the merits of the case which is still pending before the Supreme Court,” Sotto added.
