SAN FERNANDO CITY – One of every 457 residents in La Union province is an active coronavirus infection case, data of the La Union provincial government shows.
As of Thursday (April 8), 1,723 out of 786,653 La Union residents are being treated for COVID-19.
This was the same day the province recorded its highest number of active cases in a single day at 363. Almost all of the new cases are local transmission, according to the La Union health office.
San Fernando and the La Union towns of Naguilian and Agoo have been placed under a modified enhanced community quarantine.
San Fernando has 377 active cases, while six towns recorded more than 100 cases – Bauang (182), Luna (125), Naguillan (171), Bangar (115), Agoo (112), and Tubao (108).
Bangar had asked to be placed under MECQ after logging 84 cases in a day.
In a statement, Bangar Mayor Joy Penson Merin said the local government has immediately deployed its contact tracing teams and requested for augmentation of its tracking capacity.
She also requested for supplementary resources such as isolation tents and equipment, and is seeking out new temporary isolation facilities should cases increase.
As of April 6, municipal work had been suspended because of the rising cases. But the health office and Bangar’s birthing clinics, the disaster risk reduction and management office, the public market and slaughterhouse are open. YOLANDA SOTELO
