MANILA, Philippines — Two law professors of the Lyceum of the Philippines University (LPU) — Joel Bodegon and Marilyn Domingo — have died due to COVID-19, two sources said on Tuesday.

In a post on its Facebo0k page on Tuesday, the LPU Law Student Government announced that an online program was scheduled for Thursday to remember the life of Bodegon.

Previous posts also pointed to Bodegon as one of the people affected by the pandemic.

In a separate statement, public interest lawyer Romel Bagares said Domingo died a week before Boedgon.

Bagares also noted that both Bodegon and Domingo spent their lives serving other people through their practice of law. Domingo was one of the petitioners against the controversial Anti-Terrorism Act of 2020.

Bagares clarified that it was only Domingo who was a petitioner against that law — not both of them as he earlier aid in his tweet.

“Terrible news coming a day after Easter: we’ve already lost two professors at Lyceum Law to COVID-19. We not only lost expertise and wisdom, but lives spent in the service of others,” Bagares said in a tweet.

“Grateful for their lives and dedication to students, their friendship; as Christians we look to the promise of the Resurrection, when our tears of grief shall give way to tears of joy, and then all our tears shall be wiped away, and death finally dies!” he added.

The Philippines is experiencing a COVID-19 surge that health experts have attributed to new SARS-CoV-2 variants.

On Tuesday, the country posted an all-time high of 382 newly-reported deaths, pushing the death tally to 13,817.

The Department of Health said that the big single-day increase in deaths was due to errors in its COVID-19 database, leading to low death rates in the previous weeks.

As of April 6, nationwide active cases are at 152,562, as the COVID-19 case count reached 812,760.
