MANILA, Philippines — Former Vice President Jejomar Binay on Tuesday urged the government to divert funds intended for infrastructural projects, which he said are “election-related pork barrel” in reality, to assist Filipinos affected by the pandemic-induced lockdown.

Binay said the national government may also tap the funds of the National Task Force to End Local Communist Armed Conflict (NTF-ELCAC) as another source of funding to augment the assistance to people.

“Government should increase ‘ayuda’ for affected citizens,” he said in a Twitter post. “It can divert the billions earmarked for infra projects of legislators, which are in reality election-related pork barrel, and the funds of NTF-ELCAC.”

“Unahin dapat ang ayuda, hindi ang red-tagging at infra,” Binay added.

(Aid should come first, not red-tagging and infrastructures.)
