MANILA, Philippines — Authorities intercepted two motorcycles loaded with explosives in a police-military checkpoint in Santiago, Agusan del Norte on Wednesday, the Philippine National Police (PNP) said.
In a statement on Friday, the PNP said the motorcycles were also carrying food supplies allegedly intended for members of the New People’s Army (NPA).
Citing reports from Caraga police, PNP chief Gen. Debold Sinas identified the suspects as Darnel Jaudian, 24, and Raymund Tanghal, 24, who were both from Tubay, Agusan del Norte.
Seized from the suspects were:
- 15 meters of detonating cord
- One pipe bomb-type improvised explosive device
- Two magazines for 5.56mm loaded with live ammunition
- 33 rounds of caliber 5.56mm live ammunition
- Several assorted goods and food supplies
Based on investigation, the PNP said the items were supposed to be delivered to members of NPA’s Guerrilla Front 16, Northeastern Mindanao Regional Committee, which was allegedly led by Rolando Leyson Jr., or “Ka Edroy.”
Caraga PNP Director Police Brig. Gen. Romeo Caramat Jr. said the seized items are “supplies for the 52nd NPA anniversary on March 29.”
“But [these] were delayed due to tightened security measures and law enforcement operations regionwide,” Caramat said.
The PNP said the riders, along with the pieces of evidence, were brought to Santiago Municipal Police Station as charges are being prepared for filing in court.
