DOH: 9,296 new COVID-19 cases push PH’s total active infections to 124,680

MANILA, Philippines — Active COVID-19 cases in the Philippines rose to 124,680 on Tuesday with the detection of 9,296 additional cases.

This is the fifth straight day that the DOH recorded over 9,000 new cases. The health department recorded the highest single-day tally of COVID-19 cases on Monday with 10,016 infections.

According to the Department of Health (DOH), the total COVID-19 cases in the country is currently at 741,181.

Meanwhile, there are also 103 additional recoveries, pushing the number of patients who have recovered to 603,310. However, five more individuals have died, raising the death toll to 13,191.

The DOH said 20.4 percent of the 30,518 people who were tested yielded positive COVID-19 test results.

According to the health agency, active cases represent 16.8 percent of the case count, recoveries compose 81.4 percent, and deaths amount to 1.78 percent of the tally.

Of the active cases, 98.3 percent are mild and asymptomatic.

The DOH said nine duplicates, including five recoveries, were removed from the total case count. One case previously tagged as recovery was reclassified as death after final validation.

Nine laboratories were not able to submit their results to the COVID-19 Document Repository System on Monday.

The DOH and other health experts are recommending an extension of the enhanced community quarantine being imposed in Metro Manila, Cavite, Laguna, Bulacan, and Rizal beyond April 4 to better control the surge in cases.

Health Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire earlier warned that the country could see 430,000 active cases of COVID-19 nationwide, including 350,000 cases in Metro Manila alone, by the end of April if strict lockdowns will not be imposed.

The country has so far administered a total of 656,331 COVID-19 vaccine shots as of March 27.
