2 Bayan leaders in Central Luzon held
CITY OF SAN FERNANDO –– Two leaders of organizations affiliated with the Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (Bayan) have been arrested in separate places on Tuesday, March 30, by men claiming to be operatives of the police’s Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG).
Joseph Canlas, the vice-chair of the Kilusang Magbubukid sa Pilipinas and chair of the Alyansa ng mga Magbubukid (AMGL) sa Gitnang Luzon, was arrested in Barangay Sapang Maisac in Mexico town in Pampanga shortly after a raid on the AMGL office there, according to Aurora Santiago, Bayan-Central Luzon spokesperson.
Pol Viuya, chair of Bayan-Central Luzon, was arrested in Barangay Anupul in Bamban town in Tarlac, Santiago said.
She said the arrests were almost simultaneous before 7 a.m.
As of this posting, the regional police in Camp Olivas here have not received reports about the arrests, according to public information chief Col. Soledad Elepanio.
Santiago said it was not clear why Canlas and Viuya were apprehended. Copies of the warrants were briefly presented by arresting teams, it was learned.
