Union leader gunned down in Laguna
MANILA, Philippines — A union leader was shot dead in Barangay Canlubang, Calamba City, Laguna on Sunday evening, according to labor group Pagkakaisa ng Manggagawa sa Timog Katagalugan (Pamantik) and rights group Karapatan.
The union leader was identified as Dandy Miguel,35, president of Lakas ng Nagkakaisang Manggagawa ng Fuji Electric and vice chair of Pamantik, which is allied with the Kilusang Mayo.
As of this writing, the Laguna Police Provincial Office ha s not issued a report on the incident.
Miguel, who was wearing a red union shirt, had just clocked out of work at the electronics company when he was shot several times by unknown gunmen at around 8:30 p.m., a source who was near the scene when the shooting occurred told the Inquirer.
Kyle Salgado of rights group Karapatan said Miguel’s wife had confirmed it was her husband.
Miguel’s death came weeks after the March 7 simultaneous police raid against political activists in Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, Quezon. Nine people were killed during the operations, which militant groups had called a Blood Sunday.
