MANILA, Philippines — Quezon City now has nearly 7,900 active coronavirus disease (COVID-19) cases, with total infections reaching more than 43,500, disclosed Mayor Joy Belmonte on Friday.

During a webinar organized by the University of the Philippines, Belmonte reported that as of March 26, Quezon City has a total of 43,559 COVID-19 cases.

Of this number, 7,873 are active cases, 34,297 are recoveries, and 889 are deaths.

“Every day ay tumataas yan ng mga 800 [to] 900 cases so medyo nakakabahala na nga ang sitwasyon dito sa ating lungsod,” Belmonte said.

Belmonte said the Quezon City government has already established  Task Force Vax to Normal which is mandated to carry out the smooth rollout of the city’s vaccination program.

The city government earlier announced it is eyeing to vaccinate 1.6 million residents against COVID-19 during a period of from six to eight months.

Meanwhile, active COVID-19 cases in the Philippines are approaching the 100,000-mark as the Department of Health (DOH) reported a new record-high of 8,773 additional cases on Thursday.

According to DOH, the recorded new infections pushed the active cases nationwide to 99,891 as of March 25 – the highest following the detection of more transmissible SARS-CoV-2 variants – as the country’s total case count reached 693,048 since the pandemic reached the Philippines in 2020.
