Occidental Mindoro records 1st case of South African coronavirus variant

CITY OF CALAPAN—The first case of infection with the South African variant of SARS Cov2, the coronavirus that causes COVID-19, in Occidental Mindoro was reported by the Department of Health (DOH) on Tuesday (March 23).

The provincial government, in an advisory, said the infected person is a male overseas Filipino worker returning from the Middle East to his hometown San Jose.

The OFW, who is in his 30s, first tested positive for the South African variant upon entry in the Philippines. It was not clear when his flight landed in Manila.

The man had finished quarantine and was discharged.

He arrived in Occidental Mindoro last March 20 after he had been declared recovered from COVID-19.

But further tests showed the man had been carrying the South African variant of the virus.

He is now on home quarantine. Contact tracing is being done.
