FDA: 7,469 out of over 240K vaccinees suffered adverse reaction to COVID-19 vaccines

MANILA, Philippines — Some 7,469 or 3.11 percent of 240,297 health workers who have been vaccinated against COVID-19 reported experiencing adverse effects following immunization (AEFI), Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Director General Eric Domingo said Thursday.

Of the 167,798 health workers who received Sinovac’s COVID-19 vaccine CoronaVac, Domingo said 2.21 percent experienced any adverse effects.

Meanwhile, Domingo said 5.19 percent experienced adverse effects from the 72,499 health workers who have been inoculated with the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccines.

“This is of course within the expected number of AEFIs. In the clinical studies, mas active yung AEFI-seeking nila sa studies, 20 [percent], 30 percent of people getting vaccinated feel something, some mild irritation, some mild pain or up to severe adverse events,” Domingo said in an online briefing.

“Yung 2.21 percent at 5.19 percent is expected. And ang total, if you put them all together, our AEFI reporting is 3.11 percent. We collect these data every day and we see if there is any clustering or if we see any unsual events. So far, wala naman,” he assured.

One vaccinated health worker has died but the Department of Health and the FDA made it clear that the patient died of COVID-19 and not because the vaccine itself.
