Karapatan says Butuan high school assistant principal arrested

MANILA, Philippines — The assistant principal of a high school in Butuan City, Agusan del Norte was allegedly arrested by police officers, progressive group Karapatan’s Caraga chapter said on Wednesday night.

According to a Facebook post by Karapatan Caraga, San Vicente High School assistant principal Lai Consad was arrested by intelligence operatives of the National Intelligence Coordinating Agency (NICA) and the Philippine National Police (PNP) office in Butuan City.

INQUIRER.net contacted Butuan City Police Station, but officers there said that no information about such an operation or arrest had reached them as of this writing.

Karapatan said Consad is also the secretary-general of the Alliance of Concerned Teachers (ACT) in Caraga.

“Maam Lai Consad, assistant principal of San Vicente National High School in Butuan City and ACT-Caraga Secretary General have been arrested in Butuan City, today, by a team of Regional Intelligence Division 13, Regional Intelligence Unit 13, National Intelligence Coordinating Agency (NICA), PNP-Butuan and the military,” Karapatan Caraga said.

Karapatan also said that Consad was arrested based on attempted homicide charges, in relation to an operation launched by communist rebel group New People’s Army (NPA).

“She was arrested based on trumped-up case of attempted homicide related to an NPA action in Sitio Manhupaw, Brgy. Poblacion 2, Santiago, Agusan del Norte on November 21, 2020,” the group claimed.
