MANILA, Philippines — A total of 1,449 persons were caught violating the metro-wide curfew on the first night of its implementation on Monday, police said.
National Capital Region Police Office said that the city of Manila posted the highest number of arrests at 1,139. Fines were imposed on 1,588 curfew violators.
“They have the option to render community service if they fail to pay the fines imposed upon them. Meanwhile, 547 curfew violators were issued initial warnings and subsequently released,” NCRPO said.
Overall, police said that the implementation of the uniform curfew was “generally peaceful” due to local government and public support.
Metro Manila mayors have earlier agreed to implement a common curfew from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. for two weeks starting March 15 to contain the rising cases of coronavirus infections.
