Senate grants prosecution bid to subpoena Corona’s bank records
MANILA, Philippines–The Senate sitting as an impeachment court granted on Monday the prosecution team’s request to subpoena bank officials as well as other bank documents allegedly in the name of Chief Justice Renato Corona.
“The majority votes to grant the prosecution request for subpoena to the responsible officers of the Philippine Savings Bank and the Bank of the Philippine Islands for them to testify and bring and/or produce before the court documents on the alleged bank accounts of Chief Justice Corona only on the purpose of the instant impeachment proceedings,” said Senate Majority Floor Leader Vicente “Tito” Sotto III, reading from the prepared resolution of the Senate.
The Senate particularly directed the branch manager of BPI in Ayala Avenue, Makati City and the branch manager of the BPI branch along Katipunan Avenue in Quezon City to appear in the trial at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday and to bring the requested documents by the prosecution.
Sotto announced the decision of the Senate after a caucus held when the trial took a long break on Monday.
