Coast Guard orders vessels to suspend trips to quake-hit provinces
MANILA, Philippines – Philippine Coast Guard Commandant Vice Admiral Edmund Tan has ordered that shipping vessels be barred from traveling following the magnitude 6.8 earthquake which hit provinces of Negros and Cebu in the Visayas region Monday.
A Radyo Inquirer 990AM report said that all kinds of vessels should suspend trips to the Visayas region and in northern Mindanao. Those which will be passing through the said areas have also been asked to discontinue their travel and direct passengers to disembark at nearby ports.
Tan said that all PCG units in Visayas and Mindanao have been mobilized to monitor the seas, roll out precautionary measures, and inform those living in coastal villages of the tsunami alert hoisted by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).
