IBP hails Filipina lawyers on International Women’s Day

MANILA, Philippines — The Integrated Bar of the Philippines (IBP) highlighted on Monday the achievements and contributions of Filipina lawyers to the society in celebration of International Women’s Day.

“The Integrated Bar of the Philippines highlights the achievements of the Filipina Lawyer in celebration of International Women’s Day. We take pride in the social, economic, and political achievements of our sisters in the legal profession,” the IBP said in a statement.

“We recognize the love and the immense contribution of women in family life, community development, industry, and nation-building. Our world would be half-fulfilled and twice-imperiled without the women who care for us,” it added.

The IBP noted that the Philippines ranks high in global standards for women-friendly policies but added that the implementation of existing laws that protect women needs improvement.

“IBP raises awareness for women and gender issues and strongly advocates for rules and legislation further promoting gender sensitivity and equality and eliminating bias against women.

“We enjoin lawyers to challenge the status quo and meaningfully contribute to change to achieve gender parity in our lifetime,” the IBP said.

On the Global Gender Gap Report 2020 of the World Economic Forum, the Philippines ranked 16th out of 153 countries with the “narrowest gap” between men and women.

Despite an eight-drop last year in the ranking, Philippines remains the only Asian country that made it to the top twenty, followed by Lao People’s Democratic Republic which ranked 43rd.

President Rodrigo Duterte earlier urged Filipinos to support advocacies on women empowerment.

“But the work is far from over thus I urge the people to participate in advocacies and activities that promote women empowerment. Let us all work hand-in-hand to address the needs of women and honor their immense contribution to society,” he said. Liezelle Soriano Roy, trainee
