MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) has vowed to repatriate Filipino seafarers stranded in Mozambique.

“We’re working on repatriating them asap,” Brigido Dulay, undersecretary for the DFA, said in a post on Twitter.

The seafarers were stranded in the Southern African country after their fishing vessel sunk.

“Acc[ording] to our honorary consul in Mozambique [since we have no PH embassy there] our seafarers from a sunken fishing vessel were all safe and staying at a hotel in Beira,” Dulay said.

He expressed disappointment that “their POEA (Philippine Overseas Employment Administration) recruiters are nowhere to be found.”
