MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) shut down a sanitary landfill in Pangasinan province due to violations of various environmental laws.
Local DENR officials, led by Maria Dorica Naz-Hipe, regional director of the DENR-Environmental Management Bureau, served the cease-and-desist order (CDOs) to stop the operation of the Urdaneta City Engineered Sanitary Landfill on Friday.
In January, the DENR officials conducted a surprise inspection of the site and issued two CDOs for the Urdaneta landfill for violations of the Philippine Clean Water Act and the Ecological Waste Management Act.
The DENR officials gave its management until the end of February to improve the landfill by constructing a water treatment facility, siphoning the garbage seepage and identifying an ideal new cell. But the landfill has not complied.
