MANILA, Philippines — A lawmaker wants a congressional inquiry into the “wrongful portrayals” of Igorots in self-learning materials which the Department of Education (DepEd) has recalled and corrected last month.
Nueva Vizcaya Rep. Luisa Lloren Cuaresma has filed House Resolution No. 1601 to strongly condemn the “erroneous information” against indigenous culture communities.
Her measure prodded the House panels on indigenous cultural communities and on basic education and culture to conduct a probe in aid of legislation on said learning materials.
Cuaresma cited viral posts that showed some DepEd self-learning modules wrongly depicting Igorots, which she said subjected the Igorots and indigenous communities to “discrimination and public ridicule.”
Igorots refer to the indigenous peoples of the Cordilleras.
