THE SAN MIGUEL Beermen got back on the winning track as they defeated the visiting Bangkok Cobras, 94-59, in the 3rd AirAsia Asean Basketball League at the Ynares Sports Arena Saturday night.
The win was their third in five games and they got it thanks to a burst in the second period that gave them a 16-point advantage at halftime. The Beermen also got production from all corners of their lineup with all but two of their players scoring points.
San Miguel now stand within half a game behind the Philippine Patriots and the Westport Malaysia Dragons. Those two squads were playing as of presstime.
Doug Thomas and DJ Johnson combined for only 26 points but got scoring support from Leo Avenido and RJ Rizada, who shot 13 markers each, and Kelvin dela Peña who added 12. Jun Cabatu and Norman Gonzales chipped in eight apiece. Only Froilan Baguion and Marlon Basco failed to score for SMB.
The game’s outcome was a reversal of fortunes for the two teams, with SMB rebounding from its debacle against Singapore and the Cobras (2-3) failing to follow up on their 73-70 upset of erstwhile unbeaten Dragons. /Correspondent Jonas Panerio
