ILOILO CITY—Unidentified men believed to be communist guerrillas detonated an improvised explosive device (IED) targeted at policemen aboard a vehicle in Janiuay town, Iloilo province on Wednesday (March 3).
None of the policemen of the Regional Mobile Force Battalion were hurt in the blast around 9:10 a.m. at the village of Agcarope.
The policemen also found another IED near the site of the blast, according to a report of the Iloilo provincial police.
The policemen were on a clearing and security mission for a groundbreaking ceremony of an agro-forestry facility at the village of Panuran, also in Janiuay, when the attack came.
Col. Gilbert Gorero, Iloilo provincial police director, said New People’s Army rebels were most likely behind the attack.
Janiuay, 44 kilometers north of here, has traditionally been the site of clashes between government troops and rebels.
